AI Autonomy

AI autonomy describes the degree to which an AI system can pursue goals and complete tasks without continuous human direction.

Autonomy exists on a spectrum. A system might independently complete a ten-minute coding task, manage a multi-day research project or coordinate other agents while still operating within human-defined constraints.

Autonomy measures independence of action, not necessarily intelligence.
